18. Tillie Tuesday April 13, 2021

It’s just another Tillie Tuesday,

I wish it were a snooze day,

But it’s my news day,

And just another Tillie Tuesday.

Tillie, on her birthday:

“Daddy, can I tell you something? I still feel 6 1/2. I’m going to have to get used to being 7.”

Tillie Tuesday, the Father/Daughter Conversations Edition

Tillie, on pirates:

Tillie: Dad, are pirates real?

Me: (Delivers a brief history of pirates, including famous pirates of the past, the contrast between real pirates and legendary pirates, Disney’s inappropriate glorification of piracy, and the threat of modern day pirates).

Tillie: Yeah, but are space pirates real?

Tillie, on soccer:

Tillie: What are they doing?

Me: In soccer if you break the rules you can get either a yellow card or, if it’s really bad, a red card.

Tillie: How do you get a rainbow card?

Tillie, on new construction:

(Tillie really was in to trucks and machinery when she was younger).

Me: Tillie, did you see them starting the new house across the street?

Tillie: Yes, I saw them.

Me: Do you want to go see what they did today?

Tillie: Dad... It’s just a ginormous hole in the ground.

Tillie, asking for a drink:

Me to Jeanne (in front of Tillie) about two months ago: Do we have any Coke? I’m so tired I could really use a Coke.

Tillie, like last week: Can I have a Coke? I feel so tired.

Tillie, on important business:

Coming out from Starbucks I try to hand Tillie her lemonade.

Tillie: Can’t you see I’m in the middle of something?

When her important business was over,

Tillie: Sorry, I’m just super focused.

Tillie, nailing her bedtime routine:

Me: Did you brush your teeth?

Tillie: No.

Me: Then what are you doing?

Tillie: I’m pretending to be a cowgirl riding a horse and Look, I can make one eye smaller and one eye bigger. I’ve been able to do that since I was a little kid.

Tillie, on phone quality:

“Do you see your phone is glitchy, Daddy? It kind of creeps me out. Does it creep you out? Probably not.”

Tillie, whispering with the lights out after we have had a few “issues” with each other:

Me: I’m sorry.

Tillie: I’m sorry, too.

Me: I love you.

Tillie: I love you, too.

Me: I’m glad you are my daughter.

Tillie: I’m glad that you’re my father. And, also, I’m not glad because there’s a father that I don’t know. And there’s also a mother that I don’t know.

And, finally...

Tillie, on the importance of devices to superheroes:

“Is your phone kind of like your sidekick?”
